Freelance web designer, Melbourne

Freelance web designer in Melbourne.

I'm Simeon, the person behind Bluebill Studio. I design and build your website myself, set up the SEO and answer the phone when you call.

Working with a freelancer

  • One person, start to finish
  • Fixed prices in writing
  • SEO built in
  • You own the site and domain
  • No lock-in contracts
  • Based in Melbourne

Quick answer

Should I hire a freelance web designer or an agency?

Hire a freelance web designer if you want one person to design, build and look after a small business website, usually for less than an agency charges. Choose an agency if you need a large team, several specialists working at once or round-the-clock support. Either way, check their live sites and confirm you'll own the finished website.

One person, start to finish

Bluebill Studio is me, Simeon Markov. I've been building websites for more than five years and doing hands-on SEO for three. When you book a call, you talk to the person who will design your pages, write the code and set up your Google Business Profile.

That's the main difference from an agency. Nothing gets passed from a salesperson to an account manager to a junior developer, so nothing gets lost on the way. If you ask for a change on Tuesday, the person who hears it is the person who makes it.

You can read more about how I work and why I started the studio on the about page.

Freelancer or agency?

Both can build you a good website. The right choice depends on the size of the job and how you like to work:

Who you talk to

With a freelancer, the person doing the work. With an agency, usually an account manager who passes messages on.

Price

A freelancer has no office or sales team to pay for, so the same site usually costs less. My prices are fixed and published.

Capacity

An agency can put five people on a big build. I take on a small number of projects at a time, so I'm not the right fit for a 200-page site due next month.

Range of skills

I cover design, development and SEO. If you also need video, a rebrand or paid ads, an agency or a second specialist makes more sense.

What I can build for you

Most of my work is websites for Melbourne small businesses: tradies, clinics, salons, cafes and other local services. Every site is designed for your business and built by hand, so it loads fast and you aren't paying for plugins you don't need.

Sites I've built recently

The fairest way to judge a web designer is to use the sites they've built. Three of mine are live right now: a website for a Melbourne electrician, a site for a web design and SEO agency, and a membership site for a personal trainer that takes monthly subscriptions.

They're all on the work page, with links to the real thing. Open them on your phone, see how fast they load and try the forms.

How to check any freelancer

Whether you hire me or someone else, ask these questions before you pay a deposit. A good freelancer will answer all of them without hesitating:

  • Can I see live websites you've built, not just screenshots?
  • Will I own the domain, the code and the content?
  • Is the price fixed, and what would make it change?
  • Who looks after the site after it launches?
  • Do you have an ABN and written terms?
  • What happens to my site if you stop freelancing?

What happens after launch

The risk people worry about with a freelancer is being left stranded. So I set every project up to avoid that. Your domain, hosting and analytics accounts are in your name from the start, and you get the code. If I'm ever unavailable, any competent developer can pick it up.

After launch I fix anything you spot in the first 30 days and show you how to make your own edits. If you want help being found on Google after that, SEO is month to month with no contract.

What a freelance web designer costs.

My prices are fixed and agreed in writing before I start. There's no hourly billing, so the quote is the price you pay.

How working with me goes.

  1. Free 15-minute call

We talk about your business, your customers and what the site needs to do. You get honest advice, even if we're not the right fit.

  2. Fixed-price proposal

A written scope, timeline and fixed price within two business days. No hourly billing and no surprise invoices.

  3. Design

We design the key pages around what your customers need to see before they call. You review real layouts, not mood boards.

  4. Build and SEO

Hand-built, fast and mobile-first, with page titles, schema markup, redirects and analytics set up before launch.

  5. Launch and handover

We launch, submit your sitemap to Google, train you to make edits and fix anything you spot in the first 30 days.

Questions, answered.

Something we haven't covered? Just ask.

  • My websites start from $649 for up to five pages and from $1,499 for up to twelve, both as fixed prices. Other freelancers charge by the hour or by the project, so always ask for a written quote that says what's included.

  • Usually, for the same size of site, because a freelancer doesn't have an office, a sales team or account managers to pay for. Price shouldn't be the only test, though. Look at the live sites they've built and what's included after launch.

  • I'll tell you before a project starts if I have time off planned. Your domain, hosting and analytics are in your own name and you get the code, so you're never locked out of your own website and another developer could take over if needed.

  • Yes. Every site launches with the foundations in place: fast pages, proper titles and descriptions, schema markup, a sitemap and a Google Business Profile check. Ongoing SEO to climb the rankings is a separate month-to-month service.

  • I'm based in Melbourne and most of my clients are local, but I build websites for businesses anywhere in Australia. Calls and reviews happen by phone or video.

  • Yes. The code, the content, the domain and the analytics accounts are yours. If you ever move on, I hand everything over in working order.
