Local SEO for tradies: how to get more calls from Google

How plumbers, electricians and builders win the map pack and turn Google searches into booked jobs, without wasting money on ads that stop when you stop paying.

By Simeon6 min read

Local SEO for tradies is how plumbers, electricians, builders and other trades turn Google searches into phone calls without paying for every click. When someone's hot water dies at 7am or the power trips during dinner, they grab their phone, search, and call one of the first businesses they see. This guide explains how to be that business: what Google looks at, what to fix first, and a practical checklist you can work through between jobs.

How tradies actually get found on Google

For most trades, there are three places a customer might find you on Google:

  1. The map pack: the three businesses shown with a map, pulled from Google Business Profiles. For urgent, local jobs this is where most calls come from.
  2. The organic results: the normal list of websites below the map. These matter more for considered jobs like renovations, solar or switchboard upgrades, where people research first.
  3. Ads: the sponsored results at the top. They work immediately but stop the moment you stop paying.

Local SEO is about the first two. It takes longer than switching on ads, but it keeps working, and every review and improvement compounds over time.

Start with your Google Business Profile

If you only do one thing from this guide, do this. A complete, active Google Business Profile is the foundation of local SEO for trades.

  • Set it up as a service-area business. Hide your home address and list the suburbs or regions you actually cover.
  • Pick the most specific primary category. "Plumber", "Electrician" or "Builder", not a vague one. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
  • List every service. Blocked drains, hot water systems, gas fitting, switchboard upgrades, EV charger installation, whatever you do, each with a short description.
  • Add real job photos. Before and after shots, your van, your team. A few new photos a month keeps the profile active.
  • Keep your hours honest. If you offer after-hours or emergency work, make it clear.

Our full Google Business Profile optimisation guide walks through every setting step by step.

Reviews: your biggest advantage

Reviews are where good tradies can beat bigger competitors. They affect your map ranking and, just as importantly, whether people choose you once they see you.

The system that works:

  1. Ask at the right moment. When the job's done and the customer is relieved, ask in person: "If you're happy with the job, a Google review really helps a small business like mine."
  2. Send the link straight away. Text your review link the same day while it's fresh. A link that arrives next week gets ignored.
  3. Make it a habit. Ask every customer, every job. A steady trickle of recent reviews beats fifty in one month and nothing after.
  4. Reply to every review. Thank people for good ones. Respond calmly to bad ones, explain what you did to fix the problem, and take the details offline.

Build a website that makes the phone ring

Your Google profile gets you seen. Your website convinces people to call, and helps Google understand exactly what you do. A tradie website that ranks and converts has:

  • A tap-to-call button on every screen. Most of your customers are on a phone.
  • A separate page for each main service. A page about hot water systems can rank for hot water searches; a single "Services" page listing everything usually ranks for nothing.
  • Your service area, in plain words, with genuinely useful local content where you have it.
  • Licence details, insurance and warranties, clearly displayed. In Victoria, customers increasingly check these.
  • Real photos of your work and team, not stock images of a stranger holding a spanner.
  • A short quote form that lets people attach photos of the problem.
  • Fast load times. If it takes more than three seconds on mobile data, many people will give up and call the next business.

If your current site doesn't tick these boxes, our guide to websites for tradies covers what to include.

Suburb pages: do them properly or not at all

Many tradies are sold packages of dozens of pages like "Plumber Brunswick", "Plumber Coburg", "Plumber Preston", each identical except for the suburb name. Google calls these doorway pages and treats them as spam. At best they're ignored; at worst they drag down the whole site.

A better approach:

  • Focus first on strong service pages, which usually bring in more work.
  • Create an area page only when you can say something specific: jobs you've done there, common problems with local housing stock, council requirements, travel times, or the particular services people in that area need.
  • Mention the suburbs you serve naturally on your service pages and in your Google profile.

Five genuinely useful area pages will do more for you than fifty copies.

Get listed in the right directories

Consistent business details across the web help Google trust your business. Make sure your name, phone number and service area match exactly on:

  • Apple Business Connect and Bing Places
  • Yellow Pages, True Local, Hotfrog and StartLocal
  • Trade-specific directories and your industry association's member directory
  • Supplier "find an installer" pages, if your suppliers offer them
  • Lead marketplaces such as hipages or ServiceSeeking, if you use them

Marketplaces can bring leads, but remember you're renting their audience and often competing on price. Your own profile and website are assets you control.

Links from other local websites are a strong signal of prominence. For tradies, the easiest ones to earn are often real-world relationships:

  • Sponsoring a local footy or netball club and getting a link from their sponsors page
  • Suppliers and manufacturers listing you as an installer
  • Builders, real estate agents and property managers you work with regularly
  • Local business associations and chambers of commerce
  • A genuinely helpful article, such as a guide to hot water system options, that people want to share

Avoid anyone selling "100 backlinks for $99". Those links come from spammy sites and can do real damage.

Track calls, not just clicks

What matters is jobs, not website visits. Make sure you can see:

  • Calls from your Google profile, in the Performance section of Google Business Profile.
  • Calls and form enquiries from your website, tracked in Google Analytics.
  • Where customers found you. Ask every new customer. It takes five seconds and tells you what's working.

Check these numbers monthly. If calls are climbing, keep going. If they're flat, look at your reviews, photos and service pages before spending more on ads.

A simple local SEO checklist for tradies

Work through this list over a few weeks:

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile as a service-area business.
  2. Choose the most specific primary category and add every service.
  3. Upload at least ten real photos of your work, van and team.
  4. Set up a review link and ask every customer for a review.
  5. Reply to every existing review.
  6. Make sure your website has tap-to-call and a page for each main service.
  7. Show your licence, insurance and warranty details on your website.
  8. Fix your business details on the main Australian directories.
  9. Ask suppliers and partners to list you on their websites.
  10. Check your calls and enquiries once a month.

How long does it take?

With a well set-up profile and website, many tradies start getting calls from specific searches within weeks, especially searches for their business name and very particular jobs. Reaching the top three for broad searches like "plumber" plus your suburb usually takes three to six months of steady work, and longer in competitive parts of Melbourne.

The good news is that it compounds. Every review, photo and good page makes the next month a little easier, and unlike ads, the calls don't stop when the budget runs out.

If you'd rather spend your time on the tools than on Google, our local SEO service handles it month to month, with no lock-in contract.

Frequently asked questions.

Something else on your mind? Just ask.

  • A properly set-up Google Business Profile can bring calls within weeks for your business name and specific jobs. Ranking in the top three for broader searches like "plumber" plus your suburb usually takes three to six months of steady reviews and website improvements.

  • They do different jobs. Ads bring calls immediately but stop when you stop paying. Local SEO takes longer but keeps working. Many tradies run Ads while their SEO builds, then reduce ad spend.

  • No. Near-identical suburb pages are treated as spam. Create area pages only where you have something genuinely useful to say, such as local projects or specific services, and focus on strong service pages first.

  • Enough to beat the businesses around you. Look at the top three in the map results for your main service: aim to match their review count over time, with a steady flow of recent, detailed reviews.

  • Where possible. Call-out fees or typical price ranges for common jobs build trust and filter out price shoppers. For bigger jobs, explain what drives the cost and invite a quote.

  • Marketplace profiles can bring leads and a small amount of visibility, but you're renting their audience and competing on price. Your own Google profile and website build an asset you control.
